Non-surgical Alternative to Hysterectomy Provides Relief from Uterine Fibroids

posted on FRI, MAY 27 2016 by Center for Diagnostic Imaging

Uterine fibroids can cause a whole host of painful problems – from incontinence to heavy menstrual bleeding and back pain. One solution your doctor may recommend is a hysterectomy. But what many women don’t know is that a hysterectomy can be associated with:

  • Cardio vascular disease
  • Pelvic floor problems like incontinence
  • Depression
  • Loss of libido and ability to achieve orgasm

Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is an outpatient alternative to a hysterectomy. In this procedure the blood supply to the fibroids is cut off, causing the fibroids to shrink. The procedure takes about an hour and you go home the same day. Unlike a hysterectomy, you are back to active daily living the same week.
