3D mammograms and annual screening recommendations

A 3D mammogram is a new screening and diagnostic tool designed for early breast cancer detection that can be done in conjunction with a traditional 2D digital mammogram.

During the 3D part of the exam, the X-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over your breast, taking multiple breast images.

During a typical annual screening mammogram (2D or 3D), images are taken of each breast from many angles. Sometimes a follow-up diagnostic mammogram is needed after a screening mammogram to collect more information about your breast tissue. A diagnostic mammogram may take longer than a screening mammogram as it requires more images and different angles to rule out any abnormalities.

An annual screening mammogram is recommended for women beginning at age of 40, according to the American College of Radiology (ACR) and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI). The American Cancer Society also recommends that women have the choice to begin mammography screening at age 40. For the complete, updated ACS guidelines, click here. The recommendation for women with a family history of breast cancer can be even earlier.

Talk with your provider to determine when is the best age to being getting annual mammograms. A referral is not required for an annual mammogram, but is required for a diagnostic mammogram. For an annual mammogram, we will ask for you provider's contact information to share the results.
